In Indonesia, there are 8 out of 10 teenagers who have low self-esteem. A lot of this is due to high pressure from the environment in which they live which forms ideal conditions and expectations. for some adolescents, low self-esteem can lead to depression, suicide, psychological eating disorders (anorexia nervosa), juvenile delinquency, and other adjustment problems. In addition, there is a sense of urgency in having good self-esteem. If it is not obtained, teenagers will continue to think negatively and compare themselves. Furthermore, low self-esteem during adolescence positively correlates with poor health behavior, criminal behavior, and economic hardship in adulthood (Trzesniewski et al., 2006) and may even predict the emergence of depression in their future. (Orth, Robins, & Roberts, 2008).
Therefore, CIMSA newbies chose Self-Esteem as the theme of this year’s Project for Newbies, with the title REBORN or Reliving a Better Life Through Self-Esteem.
The series of REBORN activities consisted of 5 whole activities. In our pre-event we held an online campaign through all the newbies Instagram story, where they had to continuously post a series of infographics about self-esteem and participate in interactive challenges such as sharing their own experience about all things related with self-esteem. Continuing the pre-event, we held an upgrading webinar carried out online via Zoom Meeting, with the speaker and CIMSA Trainer Muhammad Hasan Al Banna, with the theme of “Raise your Self Esteem”. This upgrading webinar was attended by newbies as well as CIMSA Members.
For our main event, we held a webinar aimed at teenagers to hopefully strengthen understanding and new insights about self-esteem. This webinar was presented by 2 speakers namely Marchia Dhiya Fathin, S.Psi, who is the co-founder of the Bounce Back and dr. Akbar Ghaus, founder of @physiquedoctor.id. The topics discussed were about “Am I Self-Love or Selfish?” and “Believe in Myself, Trust My Self”. Continuing the main event, we held an offline campaign for Grade 10 students at SMAK St. Louis 2 Surabaya, inviting Dina Nastiti, M.Psi, Psikolog as our speaker with the topic “Self-Esteem to Boost Your Self Confidence” The goal of this offline campaign was to have a direct and positive impact on the newly enrolled High School students, educating them about the importance of self-esteem.
Finally, the series of REBORN events was closed with an afterparty at GRAHABIK-IPTEDOK FK UNAIR, where it was attended by newbies and CIMSA Members. The goal of this afterparty was to show appreciation to the hard working newbies and to also have fun through bonding activities. There is also an after movie uploaded to CIMSA UNAIR Instagram page, to summarize all the REBORN activities carried out by CIMSA newbies packed in one video.
Overall, we hope that all the activities and events carried throughout REBORN CIMSA PFN 2023, was able to provide many positive benefits and outcomes for the community of teenagers. Such as, increased awareness of Self-Esteem. More importantly, we hope that REBORN can ignite a spark in ourselves to think more positively about ourselves and become more confident.
