Fast fashion is described as a collection of cheap clothes that follow trends and fast production times (Debrilian; Muslichah, 2018). The fast fashion industry usually uses cheap and dangerous textile dyes, which can cause water pollution and pose a risk to human health. This happens because waste can accumulate in organisms including shellfish and fish, and will endanger the health of humans who consume these organisms.
Apart from looking at the waste generated, the fast fashion industry often ignores the negative impact on human resources and sacrifices the safety of workers. Most of the fast fashion industry is in developing countries such as Asia, Bangladesh, India and even Indonesia. They usually employ women with low education, young women and immigrants (non-residents). Workers work 14 hours a day, have low wages, no life insurance or work safety guarantees, and have to work in dangerous situations to make fast fashion products. (Sri, 2019)
Therefore, Newbies CIMSA UNAIR 2021 decided to choose fast fashion as the Project for Newbies’ theme this year. This event is called Love-Hate Relationship Pointed on Fast Fashion or LATERESPON 2022 in short, with the hope of increasing public awareness and knowledge regarding fast fashion and it’s various impacts on humans & the environment.
LATERESPON is a series of activities consisting of Pre Events such as Social Experiment, Offline Campaign on Tunjungan Street, Surabaya, and Live Instagram with Fashion Influencer, Dhea Dillah Probokusumo. And the series of activities from this LATERESPON will be closed with a Post Event consisting of a fashion show, photoshoot, and videography.
The main event was held online and offline on 9 January 2022 in the form of Webinars and Talk Shows using ZOOM Teleconference Meeting and a workshop held at Space K, Jl. Raya Darmo Permai III No.54. While for the post event, we held a fashion show at Kampus C, Universitas Airlangga, photoshoot at the Museum Pendidikan Surabaya, and made a videography to close our series of post events.
Through this event, we hope that all LATERESPON 2022 events can provide many benefits for the community so that they can increase awareness regarding fast fashion and support the sustainable and ethical fashion industry to move forward.
